What Stops you? Tension vs Compression

It's one of two things.

Tension and compression limit our range of movement. Tension is felt in the direction away from the movement whereas compression is felt in the direction of movement.โ €

๐™๐™š๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ arises when your bodyโ€™s tissues can lengthen no further. ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™š๐™จ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ occurs when one part of your body comes into contact with another part, restricting further movement.โ €

A deep backbend - Camel pose (Ustrasana)

For example, in backbends, if tension is stopping you from going further you will feel sensation in the front of the body (the torso). It will feel like a pulling, tugging sensation.โ €

โ €

If compression is stopping you, you will feel sensation in your back. This will feel more like a crushing sensation as the spinal discs are hitting each other.โ €

โ €

The difference between tension and compression is that tension can be moved through. If we move mindfully with connection to our breath we may be able to move past tension WITH TIME.โ €

โ €

On the other hand, compression should NOT be moved through. Since compression is your bone structure stopping you from going further, trying to push past compression will likely cause injury.โ €

โ €

You can use your yoga practice to become more observant of what you feel in the postures. Where do you feel the sensation?

This mindful approach will help you to stay safe in your practice. You will know when you can go deeper, and therefore increase your flexibility. And, you will know when your limited range of motion is simply due to your bone structure.
